Updates on Idaho - Put your head on my shoulder.

17 June 2014

idahoDebiheadonshouldernose.jpgIdaho came over and put her head on my shoulder to get her treat and to get her nose scratched. We've done this many times. With a heavy heart while fighting back tears, I once again pulled the cell phone from my pocket and took more "selfies" of us, something I have done so many times with a smile on my face. I usually fix myself up a bit for the camera. But not this time.

This time these two old broads were not posing pretty for the picture. This time I wanted to capture what has happen to us over 26 years. We have grown old together. She is now 29 and I am pushing 60. Age is often not pretty. Neither is having to say goodbye to your old friend.

I know that when a horse is suffering, you see if you can fix it with medicine or food change, or someting! But if none of that works, well you know where you go next.

We are not ready to give up or let go of Idaho. The vet will be out today and hopefuly there will be a solution to the problem she is having now. It could even be unrelated to the cancer. Or at least Harold and I are hoping.

In many ways over the years, Idaho has been my consulting partner for Stolen Horse International just by being there. There has been many private conference meetings in the barn, in the pasture or from the saddle.

I smile as I flash over some of those good times. She has taken the weight off my shoulders time and time again just from listening as I brush her mane and scratch under her chin with the brush. There is always the moment when she turns her tail to me, making sure I do not miss another favorite spot.

idahoandharold.jpgOh the conversations we have had since her theft about other victims like her, their owners and how to keep funding what her theft started. Last night was no different, except that I knew this could be some of the last times for me to share my thoughts with her.

If it is to be our last days, at least we have the chance to say our goodbyes. But I know if she can't be fixed, euthanasia is a kindness and a blessing. I know from experience how sad and hard it is to make that decision. Harold and I would rather not have to make it. As loving owners, we cannot allow our beloved Idaho to suffer pain for a minute longer than necessary.

She is a horse who has given love and received it with a grateful heart. So please keep sending your prayers, your thoughts, your advice. Harold and I appreciate each and every note. Our prayer is that she is just like some of the rest of us senior citizens and all she needs is a litte more fiber in her diet. If you are slightly aged and reading this, you may appreciate the humor in my last statement. It made me chuckle.

Again, thank you for caring. I will keep you updated as the day progresses with our fingers crossed hoping for yet another miracle. It would not be the first one associated with this horse.
