Commandante Found in Terrible Pain After Theft Attempt

On Mothers Day of 2002 someone cut my fence to my horses and led my Paso Fino out. I found him with both his front legs broken and had to be put to sleep. They sheriff dept has suspended the investigation due to no leads. On your web site had two horses that were found that were taken about 10 to 15 miles from my house. I didn't know if they could be the ones that did it or if they ones in the newspaper article maybe. Please understand I am not accusing anyone. We just help to find out who could do this.  Please read our story.

This is a tale of a wonderful friend and a great horse.  His name was Comandante, and he was a member of our family.  He came to our home afraid and nervous.  With time and care he came to trust us and we to love him.  We loved to watch him gallop over the pastures with our other horse; Buddy.  They were best of friends.

On May 11th, 2002, my husband, son and myself were grooming Buddy.  My daughter (2years old) was loving on Comandante.  We  told him that he would get his turn the next day.  We never got to keep our promise!

Some time during the night someone came behind our home to our horses. They made sure they were in a blind spot.  They cut the fence to the pasture between 2 fence post.  They led Comandante  out.  When he was unsure of what you wanted he would paw the air with his front leg.  You could see in the grass where they went around in a circle and laid down.  That was the first sign of blood.  He must have gotten up  and moved to the area where they left him lay and where I found him!

On May 12th, 2002 (Mothers Day) my son and I came out around 7 am.  I didn't see Comandante with Buddy.  We went looking for him.  I saw him laying down out side the fence. I knew something was wrong.  I started to scream to my son to get my husband.  When I got to him he looked up at me.  His eyes were begging for me to help him.  You could  see in his eyes the pain he was in.   Both his front legs were broken clear thru!   All I could do was cry.  We had to put him down since his injuries were  so bad.  How can someone do this?

It appeared to be a theft gone bad.  They didn't touch Buddy or the calves that were there.  Buddy started to run the fence to get to him.  Buddy would not go thru the cut fence.  For the next month Buddy would yell for Comandante all the  time.  He started to pick up Comandates habits.

About 2 weeks later my husband was called in for a lie detector test.  One of our neighbors said that he did it.  He passed the test and the Sheriff's office suspended the case.

When my daughter sees a white horse she screams there is Comandante!  As I write this I am crying.  Who could do this? He was such a sweet and gentle horse.  It breaks my heart to know that we will never get to watch him run and play except in our dream.  He  should have had a long life.

Comandante deserves to rest in peace.  He and his family cannot do that till we find who did this.  If anyone can help us it would mean so much to us.
