Missing Horse from Alabama: Royal Tern 4/14/04
Found
I am sad to have to report that the search for Royal Tern has come to an end, and not the one we could have wished. The notion that she had been stolen always seemed a bit incredible, but after days of diligent searching turned up nothing, it was looking like it must be true. It turns out that the first and most obvious guess - that she had gotten out of the field - turned out to be correct.
Today Anita made the sad discovery of Tern's body, in a small sinkhole on neighboring property. It appears that she got out probably in the dark, and went head first into the unseen
hazard breaking her neck and probably killing her instantly. It was a hole just deep enough to prevent her from being seen unless you were right on top of it, and in amongst some trees. It would not have trapped a
living horse.
We do want to thank the legion of people who helped in the search and spread the word of her loss in case she had been stolen.

Subject: Missing horse
Anita Barfield aka etosha of this list needs help. Three days ago her
grey yearling filly Royal Tern, disappeared from a 100 acre field outside Gadsden, Alabama where she was in a herd with about 14 other
horses, none of whom are missing.
She has searched the field and asked neighboring farms if they have
found the filly, and so far there has been no trace of her. She has
contacted the sheriff's department and animal control. She has
searched the heavens for vultures. Nothing at all has been found.
It seems rather unlikely that anyone would choose this yearing to steal, but there is no better explanation either.
She is the only Thoroughbred offspring by Anita's late lamented stallion Roy Roy Roy and is utterly
irreplaceable. She is a grey filly
(reddish) with a large star and socks on LF and LH. I have posted a
picture to our files in foals of 2003, though the picture is from September of last year.
Tern was located in Etawah Co. just outside Gadsden, Alabama. She was
located on Anderson Rd. just off Tidmore Bend.
I believe there is an internet site devoted to missing horses and if
someone could send me the URL, I'd appreciate it.
To make matters worse Anita's phone is out of service. So here are
two contact numbers:
Jim Bowen (256) 547-3380
Sarah McCarthy (714) 235-3671 or email me at smcc@neteze.com
Feel free to cross-post this anywhere that seems helpful.
