Bay BS Paint Gelding stolen from Madison County, Georgia – Jan. 8, 2007
RECOVERED 1/11
/07

A suspect has been ARRESTED and CHARGED with a FELONY!

Debi has just spoken to the investigator who made the arrest. A family in the next county had reported their son had found a horse while out hunting. Upon questioning the suspect, it was determined that he'd attended a party near Jackie's that night and while drunk, had cut the fence and ridden M most of the way back to his house. M was found about 5-6 miles from Jackie. There are more details that cannot be released pending an investigation. During his time away from home, M was kept in a dog pen!  (added Jan. 12, 2007)

Victim's quote - Describing how M’s theft has affected her family, Jackie says, “We are devastated and very worried that he is scared and cold and alone. He has never known anyone but us and has only been away from home on a few occasions. He does not deserve this. He has been nothing but caring and affectionate to everyone he meets. We just want him home where he will be safe and sound with his other horse buddies, tucked in his blanket.”

The Rest of M's Theft & Recovery Story ...

Well, as you’ve all heard, M IS HOME!!!!!! Sorry for the delay in writing this, it’s been busy around the house since he was recovered. I got the phone call about 5:30pm on Thursday from Investigator Patton stating he had found our horse. That had to have been the most exciting phone call I had ever received. Earlier that afternoon I was speaking to a psychic, I was willing to do anything it took to find M. She told me he was okay and close but very well hidden. He was not scared just confused about why this guy had him. She described the kidnapper as being slender, male, in his twenties, and dark hair. As I was talking to the psychic, Dionne King, an employee at the University of Georgia, left me a message about a suspicious man seen by her farrier. The guy claimed to have been looking for his horse who had gotten out earlier. Dionne was concerned and decided to take a trip by her house before picking up her daughter. M was standing in her front yard at the fence line with her horse. The police were already there as was the thief. She was able to calm him down and put a halter on him until we got there with the trailer. Later, Investigator Patton informed us that the boy had admitted to taking M. He claims he was drunk, found some fence cutters behind our neighbors shed, cut the fence, put a rope around M’s neck and rode him most of the way back to his house, at least 5 miles. Now those of you that know horses, this was an amazing feat. M has never been ridden bareback or with just a halter. He’s a great horse, but not that well-broke. Plus, he pastures with two other horses and they are inseparable. I highly doubt he rode him away with just a rope around his neck. So, how this guy managed to do all of this drunk is beyond me. I just don’t understand why he didn’t bring him back.

More of the story is that we had found a cell phone in the yard between my house and my neighbor’s house. The Madison County police officer that initially took the report did not even bother to look at it. When Investigator Patton came Wednesday we turned the cell phone into him and showed him where we had found it. Our neighbors just happened to come home while Patton was there. He questioned the man that lived there and he claimed he didn’t hear or see anything that night but the cell phone might belong to one of his friends. It turned out that it did belong to his buddy that [allegedly] stole our horse. We know the neighbors had some involvement, we just can’t prove it yet. While Patton was tracing the cell phone’s owner, calls started coming in about M’s whereabouts. The thief’s own parents called the Oglethorpe County police and told them where M was. The thief had told his parents that he had found M in the woods while he was hunting but they figured something was suspicious. He had been keeping him in a dog pen behind their house.

Low and behold, M is finally home, with the help of many people. He is very happy to be home. He was extremely exhausted that night, he lay in his stall most of the night, and he was very thirsty, drinking approx. 10 gallons of water over that night. We are gradually getting him back to his normal diet. His regular vet was out Friday and she definitely agreed that he looked tired and a little thin. He’s got some scratches on his back legs and face and a nasty hoof crack on a front hoof but nothing that won’t heal. The kidnapper is sitting in [jail] facing felony charges. We will seek the maximum punishment.

I just want to thank everyone for everything they did to help us find M. I wish I had the time to thank each of you individually. If it had not been for Dionne seeing a [NetPosse] flyer with his picture, she may not have recognized him. The night we got him back we could tell that he was happy to be home. Oh, and he had no problem with the trailer, he jumped right on. I feel like animals don’t realize how much their owners mean to them either until something like this happens. We knew he was glad to be home, he has been overly loving to us since, and I can see him becoming spoiled in the near future. He’s getting back on his normal routine and doing great!!! M and I can’t thank everyone enough. All the prayers brought him back safe and sound. We missed him dearly and are absolutely ecstatic he is at home where he is safe, tucked in his blanket, and loved very, very much!!!

I want to give a special thanks to the volunteers and Debi Metcalfe at netposse.com as well as the staff, especially Jodie Harvey, and students at the University Of Georgia College Of Vet Medicine.

To those who are still looking for their horses: Get the word out and pictures, the horse community is amazing. I have learned that there are truly amazing people out there willing to help from all over the country. Have faith and you will find the answers.

I want to add this prayer which meant a lot to me during the search for M and hope it will give faith to those who haven’t found their beloved horses:

“Dear Father in Heaven, I thank You that everything hidden is brought to the light and that you see where "M" is right this minute. You created him for this family to teach them and guide them on their journey closer to You. I thank You that You work ALL things out for our good and Your Glory. I thank You that You care about how this family is feeling and know they need Your help in getting their beloved "M" back safely home. Papa, please surround "M" with Your Heavenly Warrior angels right now and protect him from all evil. Please turn this situation around and send Your angels to do this family's bidding for them. Hear their cries we beseech O Holy One and we ask in the Name of Your Precious Son Jesus Christ, according to Your Will, to move mightily on their behalf. Thank You Father and Bless. Love, your daughter, Patti

Believe God has heard all your prayers and knows your hearts pain. Trust Him with this and don't give up. God Bless all of you.”

Sister Patti

I also want to attach a quote sent by Kris Szuba that I think applies to everyone out there who helped me look my horse:

"A hundred years from now, it will not matter the sort of house I lived in, what my bank account was, or the truck I drove....but the world may be different because I was important in the life of the animals and the living things on this earth."
