BREAKABEEN - The story of Leland Neff's missing horses surfaced immediately following the flooding caused by Hurricane (Tropical Storm) Irene on Aug. 28. The flash flooding enveloped Neff's 150 acres where 22 horses, primarily mares and their foals as well as a few young stallions were pastured.
Neff's property in Breakabean borders the Schoharie Creek just north of the hamlet of Blenheim on state Rt. 30 . According to Neff, the 10 foot high water rose across route 30 and up to his driveway. His home was spared, but the pastures on the other side of the highway were not spared.
Since the flood, Neff has not found any of the missing horses. "We haven't turned up one," said Neff, a world renown photographer and artist who moved to Blenheim seven years ago.
