It’s Not All About the Money!

In the days after a horse is recovered we are often asked, “Who will get the reward money?”

"Victims want to do everything they can to locate and recover their missing animal as soon as possible. They know that someone may have witnessed their theft or situation, seen their horse after it was taken, or heard someone talking about it. A common response is to offer a monetary reward. Simply put, the reward is an incentive for a person who may have valuable knowledge to take steps to provide that crucial information to the people who can use it to find their stolen horse,” says equine attorney R.L. Adams.

What makes us different from a social media page featuring rescue horses and other services or an individual? We basically work around the clock when a completed report is submitted to the organization and an alert is issued. Depending on the type of case and circumstances, our volunteers may work for months, or even years networking both on and off of social media and consulting/advising victims.

By working together – our nonprofit organization while organizing news media, law enforcement government agencies, social media and committed volunteers – can offer victims support during their search and recovery and help them in ways that can’t be duplicated otherwise.

When offering a reward, keep in mind that you are entering into a contractual relationship that creates a legal obligation to pay the amount of the reward according to the terms in which you agreed. Our staff advises every person who considers making the offer of a reward that they are entering into a contractual obligation. We suggest that they must be certain that they are ready, willing, and able to keep their end of the bargain. Setting aside the amount of the reward when it is offered, will assure those funds are available if needed and can help to avoid costly litigation.

The choice to offer a reward is totally the decision of the person filing the report. In signing the contract, they indicate that they completely understand the terms in which the reward is to be paid when a horse is recovered. Failure to pay a reward to a person or organization which has “accepted” the offer by providing the desired information is a breach of contract, which can be the basis for a lawsuit for damages.

Rewards offered by the victim definitely help us, so we can hopefully keep our doors open for victims past, present and future as well. We do the same for every victim in the first 48 hours of issuing the alert reward or not.

Although the organization does not pay anyone and operates with volunteers, our programs and expenses of $30,000 or more a year has to be paid. The money, does not matter for many while it is the main incentive for others. For this organization the reward money promised to the “pay it forward” program can be the difference between us offering our educational programs and being here for our victims, or not. When we receive a reward the money supports our programs and victim’s service programs, which includes our website report listings. It also pays the many other expenses the business acquires.

We do not do what we do for the money but it takes money for us to do what we do!!
