JACKSON TOWNSHIP - A 25-year-old Ocean County woman has been charged with stealing a pair of horses she had previously owned from farms in Jackson and Howell townships, police said.
Katie Meo, of Toms River, was charged Monday with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and criminal trespass, police said. The horses were recovered safely in Pennsylvania, police said.
Police were called at 9:15 a.m. on June 8 to the Crack of Dawn Farm on Grawtown Road in Jackson after a horse was reported stolen from the property overnight, police said.
The thief allegedly cut through the fence on a remote part of the property and then stole the horse, which was recently the subject of a now settled court dispute, police said.
While officers were investigating the theft, they learned that a second horse had been reported stolen from another property in Howell Township on the same night, police said. That horse had also been owned by Meo, police said.
After the reports of the incidents circulated on social media, both horses were located at a stable in Pennsylvania where Meo paid to have the horses boarded, police said.
Meo was already being lodged in the Camden County Jail on undisclosed charges when she was charged in the thefts. She is currently being held in the Monmouth County Jail. No bail has been set.
