Horse tails are beautiful but they serve
more purposes than just looks.

Did you know that it is considered a criminal attack against a horse when a tail is cut off? We hear of reports of horse tail hair theft almost on a daily basis. Most recently there was a report of horse tail theft in Kansas City where over the past six weeks, horse owners have noticed hair missing from the tails of six of their horses.

Thieves have been known to cut horse tails and sell them to make money. Horse tail hair is used to make necklaces and bracelets, keychain fobs, intricate headstalls and other such woven gems. Horse tail hair is also used for the bows on string instruments.

Horses’ tails have been known to be used as hair extensions for human hair or horse tail extensions. Tail extension for horses going into show ring has become almost a "must" along with matching shirts & saddle pads, if you want to make an impression. And real horse hair extension are in high demand & highly priced, you would be amazed at the price one pays for these - just do a quick Google search.

A horse's tail serves three purposes:

1. Warmth. A cold horse will use its tail to prevent heat loss from the area under the tail and may bring its tail all the way between its legs to cover the sheath or udder.

2. Fly protection. Horses use their tails as fly swatters in the summer. If the flies are bad, horses in a field will often be seen standing with one's head next to the other tail, keeping flies off each other's faces.

3. Body language. A flattened tail may mean fear (unless it's cold). A tail lifted over the back indicates

enthusiasm. A swishing tail may be swatting at a fly, or it may be expressing irritation. A horse that swishes its tail intently while being ridden, or holds its tail in a tense attitude, especially if crooked, is an unhappy horse - likely in pain, over-bitted, or reacting to tension in the rider. A swished tail combined with pinned ears is a clear warning of forthcoming aggression.

If caught, those responsible for this type of crime could face multiple charges.
