Too Close To The Border

Too Close To The Border

26 January 2015

On January 12, 2015, the San Diego Sheriff's Department was notified of the possible theft of two draft horses from the Kenner Ranch nearby. First Sasha, then Moose had not come up for morning feeding. An exhaustive search of the 200 acre property had turned up nary a clue.

Their disappearance would be treated as a grand larceny felony.

sashajpg.jpg"They're our family," said Gina Pepper with Kenner Horse Ranch. "It’s like having a child missing. We spend a lot of time with them out here -- we train them, we take care of them when they're sick, we make sure they have blankets on them when they're cold and it is freezing, we count noses every night and morning, and if somebody’s missing, it’s an all-out search to find them. It's like missing a child."a

Moose is a Belgian draft and Sasha is a Belgian cross bred. Neither one is freeze marked, branded, or microchipped-something that makes it extremely easy for thieves to forge documents of ownership for sale and/or shipment.

Like many areas of the country, there have been reported horse thefts, although exact numbers are hard to determine. Kathleen Kenner, owner of the ranch, and Gina Pepper have expressed their concern and willingness to sit up at night to guard the remaining horses on the ranch. "I want to sit here with a gun every night and guard the gate," Pepper said. "I'm really angry."

They have been warning their neighbors and telling them to keep their horses safe from possible thieves.

If you have any information about the disappearance of the horses, call the San Diego Sheriff's Department at (858) 974-2327 or Kenner Ranch at (760) 473-5681.
