Black Diamond, Alberta, CANADA -- A Calgary Stampede competitor drove into Black Diamond, parked his rig with his three competition horses inside and went into the local hotel for a break. When he came out, the rig with the horses inside was gone.
He notified the Royal Canadian Mounted Police immediately to make a report. Local police made patrols in Turner Valley and Black Diamond. The owner later spotted the rig - with the horses still inside - in Black Diamond.
The thief began to drive away, but the owner jumped on the running board and tried to talk the driver into at least unloading the horses. Instead, the guy recklessly drove into a barrier at speed and knocked him off.
Police located the abandoned rig some time later in Turner Valley with the horses inside. The owner came and verified their identities. All three were banged up and nervous from the bad trip they had been given. They will be pulled from competition due to their injuries until healed.
The owner will continue on to the Stampede and enter the competition as planned.
The RCMP investigated the incident and made an arrest of 23 year old Joshua Lemire of Turner Valley. He was charged withTheft of truck, Theft over $5000.00, Dangerous Driving causing bodily harm, Criminal Negligence causing bodily harm, Endangering Animals, and failing to remain at two separate accident scenes plus additional violations. He was remanded into custody to await trial.
