Beloved and Rare Heritage Horses Stolen from South Carolina Farm

Beloved and Rare Heritage Horses Stolen from South Carolina Farm

08 May 2017

To make an already stressful situation even worse, two beloved horses were stolen from a South Carolina farm during a rain storm.

A pair of Marsh Tacky horses were reported stolen in the midst of a recent storm that hit Kershaw County on April 23. River, a bay mare, and Yago, a dark bay gelding, were said to have been removed from their homes at Dragoon Farms in the town of Boykin.

While it might seem possible that they simply slipped their stables amid the chaos, Jackie McFadden, of the Carolina Marsh Tacky Association, states that both the power and locks were cut from their enclosures, allowing for easy removal through an access gate.

“Those little bay horses hold my heart,” McFadden told WACH Fox57. “I have to get them back!”

The horses, an extremely rare and endangered breed of Colonial Spanish Horse found only in South Carolina, were used in the Citadel’s living history club, and were kept at the farm to learn how to ride as Calvary.

“They both have stars and River has a white left rear pastern and her mane falls to the left,” she said. “Yago has some roaning on his flanks and he has a double mane.”

The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the theft and McFadden has since opted to offer a reward of $2,000 for any information leading to their safe return.
