What is an equine VIN number? It is simply a microchip for your horse. Stolen Horse International was first in the field of selling microchips online directly to the public, which today Is (are) offered by many companies, some good, some not so good. Stolen Horse International started selling the microchips in our NetPosse Store for the following reasons.

At the time Stolen Horse International started selling the microchips most veterinarians did not sell microchips for horses and when they did the cost was too expensive for most horse owners. Our goal was to offer microchips to provide a VIN or serial number, (catchphrases) we started to help the public easily visualize the purpose of the microchip in their animal. We are happy to see that many use these phrases today.

We offered our packages, some of which cannot be duplicated by any other vendor, at a very low price because they include the only all-ID registry available today, the NetPosse Identification Program (NIP).

The microchip itself is an electronic device the size of a grain of rice which is implanted into your horse’s neck. This encapsulated glass microchip is inserted with a syringe into the nuchal ligament on the left side of the neck of a horse and remains invisible to the naked eye. It can only be read by a radio-frequency microchip scanner which reads the number of the microchip. A microchip cannot be altered like other forms of ID such as brands and lip tattoos or physical coloration of the horse, which is a plus for any horse who (that--people are ‘who’ and horses are ‘that) has one.

The microchip number can then be used to help identify the owner of the horse if it is stolen, lost in a disaster or other missing horse situations where positive ID is needed. The microchip can also be used for herd control for owners with large numbers of horses, especially if the look similar in color.

We recommend that you enter your information for your microchip into the registry from the company where you purchased your chip first. We also recommend that you purchase the NIP Registry from our NetPosse Store and enter all data about your horse, other types of ID and much more into your own NIP Registry located on NetPosse.com.
