SELLER BEWARE! Selling horses can make you a victim

If you sell a horse, do you know why should you never let them leave your property until after the check has cleared the bank or you've gotten full cash payment? Even with a signed contract in hand, you can end up like many of our victims with a story that are becoming more commonplace here at NetPosse.com. 

When we get a call from victims like Sherri about Lily, they say, "My horse has been stolen!" However, cases like this may not be "theft" by law. Most of these cases are considered civil, and the owner needs to locate their horse before pursuing legal action in our judicial system. At NetPosse, we call this type of situation a "civil theft."

Then there is Pam who owns King from North Carolina whose was trading him to a lady in Connecticut. King arrived safely, but the woman didn't uphold her end of the deal. She demanded King's owner come get him and pay back board. Before the owner could get him, the woman called to say he was missing. This is when she turned to NetPosse. Within a few days and with the help of some wonderful people, King was on his way back home … but the entire deal cost Pam $1600 and the other woman (previously convicted of animal abuse) is not out a dime so far.

Maybe this has happened to you, maybe not. If the horse community does not take notice and protect themselves and help those who have been victimized, this "civil theft" will not only continue but will grow. Prosecuting the guilty party is not only hard but costly, thus the reason it is the calculated and preferred way to "steal" your horse. If the cost of recovery outweighs the worth of the horse then most "civil thieves" are not prosecuted and are free to victimize more people...and that they do!
