LANCASTER, N.H. -- In a surprise turnaround, the couple charged with fleeing with 8-year-old Mary Nunes in 2004 during a child custody dispute between the mother and her previous husband pleaded guilty Wednesday.
The plea for the mother, however, was almost scuttled after statements by her defense attorney, who the judge said might have violated the N.H. Rules of Professional Conduct.
When Genevieve Kelley was asked by the judge if she is knowingly, intelligently and voluntarily entering her plea, Alan Rosenfeld, her lead attorney, told Coos Superior Court Judge Peter Bornstein she knowingly is but had been coerced and intimidated by the prosecution into a plea agreement and is "terrified" of the possibility of being convicted at a trial.
That angered Bornstein, who said, "I've about had it with the plea agreement dance-around."
It also prompted Genevieve to tell Rosenfeld, "You're no longer my attorney right now."
