Avid Microchip Products Information from Avid

Avid offers two types of chips.
  • Original AVID® MicroChips are nine digits long.
  • The AVID® EuroChip is ten characters long and looks like this on the scanner: 132028476A

The longer format allows the EuroChip to be read by other brand name scanners, such as:

  • Destron® and
  • HomeAgain™.

You must have the AVID® Universal MiniTracker to read this chip.

Our EuroChip is the same size and price as our regular AVID® MicroChips.

More information from Avid

Does AVID® make a scanner that can read all chips used in the United States?
Yes.

How can the microchip help if my horse is stolen?
The chip number provides law enforcement the equivalent of a 'Vehicle Identification Number' for your horse, and provides you with proof that it is YOUR horse.  This information is backed up by our database.  In combination with our published Hot Sheets of stolen ID numbers, not only is the public alerted, but thieves are deterred.

What about an emergency...a fire, flood, storm, etc?  Will the chip help save my horse?
AVID currently works with all national disaster and emergency preparedness groups in America.  When a microchip is found in a horse, he is a phone call away from being reunited with his owner.

What is the injection site for horses?
The tiny chip goes into the nuchal ligament halfway between the poll and withers just below the mane.  Most horses do not react.

How long does the chip last?  Does it wear out?  Can my horse feel anything when he is being scanned?
The chip is guaranteed for the lifetime of your horse.  It will not wear out or fade.  The horse feels nothing at all when he is being 'scanned.'

Scanners are universal and will allow you to read AVID®, Destron®, and HomeAgain microchips.

The AVID® microchip system is used around the world by veterinarians, animal owners, and regulatory entities.
Delivery systems are safe, accurate and reliable.
