"Horse Theft.  Been There--Done That"
by Debi Metcalfe

Are you taking pictures of your horse, or is someone else?

Don’t Be Another Statistic
It Can’t Happen to Me

“No one could get my horse because…”
“My barn is behind my house.”
“I have a watchful neighbor who lives across from my farm.”  ”I have a .22 that will keep them away.”
”My horse will not load.”
”You can’t catch my horse.”

Heard comments like this before?  I have.  Think your horse won’t or can’t be stolen?  WRONG!  Think again.  It can.  Unless you have your horse and property under 24-hour surveillance, there are no foolproof security precautions you can take that are guaranteed to stop a horse thief. BUT, you can certainly make it a LOT HARDER for your horse to be stolen AND make the chances of recovering your horse a lot better.  I found this out the hard way.  Hopefully, what I learned will help prevent others from going though the same ordeal that my family and I went through.

As many as 55,000 horses are reported stolen each year.  Nothing may prevent your horse from becoming another “statistic”, but there are several things that you can do to drastically improve your chances of recovering your horse.  Many of these things are simple and easy to do.  Some are just plain common sense.  Others may take a little time and effort.  Believe me, you’ll wish you had followed these suggestions, if you EVER take that walk to the paddock or barn and your horse isn’t there, as usual, to greet you.

  • Keep good, up-to-date records on your horse close at hand
  • Check on your horses regularly
  • Maintain your property
