Read the story of an event VA volunteer Michele:
A Volunteer's Story - Manning the SHI Booth
By Michele, NetPosse volunteer in Virginia
"Thank God you're here! I was so hoping to find you today. I need a microchip - someone tried to steal my horses last weekend!" said a woman as she rushed in from the rain and straight to the booth, scattering drops of water over the floor as she spoke.
And this was the start of my first experience manning the NetPosse booth at the Richmond Equine Extravaganza the weekend of October 26, 2007.
Hers was the first of many stories we heard over the next three days. Some alarming, some funny, some sad, but all were told to us as though we were best friends and this was an important topic of conversation.
As a local 4-H leader, I had planned on being at the Equine Extravaganza for at least 2 days with different sets of kids. When Debi Metcalfe sent out a note asking for some help with the booth, I decided that one more day would not be that much more, so I arranged a day away from work and off I went.
Wouldn't you know it, but the Extravaganza started in the middle of our first rain in a very long month. It was delightful to see so many smiling horse people strolling through the mud, being pelted by drops of water, and avoiding the larger puddles as they entered the complex to learn, gather information and see their friends.
Once in the first vendor barn, it only took me a few minutes to recognize Debi's face from the NetPosse web site and announce that I was "Help."
I found the NetPosse.com several years ago and have followed the stories of missing and stolen horses, along with lots of happy endings. I knew this as a place where I could go and make a little difference even if it was just passing an Idaho Alert along, e-mailing a distraught or happy owner, or praying for all the horses that want to go home.
Since my daughter and I have gone to many horse events over the years, I have even created my own missing horse book in a huge three ring binder to set up wherever we go. On the front, I put a collage of missing horses head's with the title: "Won't you take a minute to look for me? I want to go home." It has encouraged many to keep an eye out for those we love.
The booth has similar books, but in addition we have a nice T.V. screen that can show a variety of videos to people as they walk by. There, listening to the hard death of Comandante after a failed theft attempt, we had many people want to learn more. We explained the benefits of microchips, freeze branding, and registering with us. Somewhere along the days we sold over 25 microchips, lots of security signs, including some very funny ones that let the visitor know we mean business … but we also listened.
Because I gave 3 days to the booth, Debi was able to get out and introduce herself to others that have some pull in different places. We were able to get 7 horses chipped that first day, including the famous Diablo that shook his head "YES" - he wanted a microchip.
If you're looking for a way to help out and you don't have anything but time, consider finding out where Debi and the booth will be next. Offer to spend a few hours at a time so they can go out and fund raise. Offer to find lunch, Diet Coke, or drop something off to someone she's promised to get information to. Find people you know at that event and offer to introduce them to her.
When you're manning a booth, there are no little jobs. Of course, knowing how to re-start the VCR or DVD is helpful, too. I hope many of you will consider helping out in this way. Know that your money is being well spent, the time spent is well used, and the information we present is well received. I hope all of you have a chance to come by and see the booth at the next event. ~ Michele

Feature on the Sold Out
Winter edition ofThe Gaited Horse Magazine?
Throughout history there have been horses whose names we
still recall as displaying the true heart and spirit of a
horse, Traveller, Comanche, Seabisquit. And there is a horse
that might not typically be considered a hero. She has never
carried a general into a battle, escaped capture on the open
plains, or proven herself on a racetrack - however, she is a
hero to horses, as well as humans. Because of her many
other horses have been saved from an uncertain fate, even
death - all because she once grazed quietly in a serene
pasture. |
