Debi Metcalfe founded Stolen Horse International (SHI) with a mission to educate the public regarding horse theft. Awareness and preparation are keys to preventing theft, but they are not guarantees against it. Therefore, Debi also goes to great lengths to help victims recover stolen horses through SHI and NetPosse.
Anyone who owns a horse should join NetPosse. The first reaction to most visitors at events such as the Equine Affairs is . . . People steal horses?
Once Debi answers, "Yes, there are an estimated 40,000 or more stolen each year," the door is opened, and horse owners quickly discover how unassuming and naïve most of us really are when it comes to theft.
Every horse owner needs to understand that Horse Theft doesn't discriminate against breed, color or disciplines. It can happen to any horse, any where, any time. Thieves steal horses from public pastures, boarding barns, stalls with security systems, rodeo and show events. None of the horses, presenters or disciplines represented in the images captured at KEA is immune.
Yes, it CAN happen to you!
Another important aspect of horse protection that Debi educates the public about is what to do during a natural disaster. The recent devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina should be a real eye-opener to every animal owner.
How are you to prove ownership when you have lost all of your registration papers, pictures and bills of sale?
If your horse is stolen and found at an auction house ... How can you positively identify yours from several other horses that have similar markings?
Debi provided those answers and many more to attendees of the Kentucky Equine Affaire. Through Debi's dedication and SHI's outreach, there are now many more informed horse owners.
